Detail  [Pages 97-98. Nominated a cadet in the Madras Establishment. ""The success of the British arms in Europe, however, induced him to change the Company's service for that of the King's, with a view of going on immediate service."" Resigned his cadetship and purchased an ensigncy in the 81st Regiment, aged 16, 17 May 1798. In Apr. 1811 sailed for India to join the 67th Regiment. In Mar. 1812 made Deputy Quartermaster-general of India. This was cancelled as someone else had been nominated, sent to Java in that role. In June 1815, suffering from Batavian fever, he left for Europe]
