Was Governor of Mauritius at his death. In his 64th year. Younger son of Benjamin Smith, a West India merchant, of London and of Lys, Hampshire, Sheriff of that county in 1780, by Charlotte, dau. of Nicholas Turner, esq. of Bignor, Sussex, & Stoke, near Guildford. Ensign 1795. Made a Lieut.-col. in June 1805, later to Bombay as commander of the 65th Regiment, then at Bombay, in 1807 or 1808. He remained in India nearly 20 years. He commanded in 1809 and 1810 two expeditions against the pirates in the Persian Gulf, ""his brother being then resident at Bushire"". Married 1st Ellen dau. of Thomas Galway, esq. of Kilkerry, co. Kerry, 2 daus., 2nd in 1819 Isabella Curwen dau. of Eldred Curwen Pottinger, esq. of Mount Pottinger, co. Down, sister to Sir Henry Pottinger, Bt., now Minister Plenipotentiary in China, 2 daus and heir now ~Sir Lionel, only 9 years old. A correspondent in the Sept 1842 issue, page 226, says that the father's name was Thomas Smith] |
