At Charlton, in his 79th year. Born 5 July 1764, 3rd and youngest son of Lieut.-col. William Hislop, Royal Artillery. ""His two elder brothers were both slain in India: the former, James, aid-de-camp to Sir Eyre Coote, K.B. at the Battle of Polilore, in 1781; and the latter, William Capt. R. Art. in 1782."" Cadet R.A., 1778. In March 1812 he was given the local rank of Lieut.-General in Bombay. He sailed on the 15 Nov. following on HMS Java and on the 29 Dec. was captured off St Salvador, Brazil, by the USS Constitution. ""Sir Thomas Hislop being permitted to land at St Salvador on his parole, returned to England in a cartel with his personal staff."" The rest of the crew of the Java arrived in April 1813 and his exchange was effected soon after. He was about to embark again when the post of command of the Madras army became vacant on the resignation of Lieut.-Gen. Abercromby, and he was appointed to it. On the 1 Jan 1814 he sailed on HMS Revolutionnaire, arriving at Madras 27 May. Made a baronet, 1813. He married 30 Oct 1823 Emma, dau. of the Right Hon.
