CommentTranscriptions taken from Graves at Serampore Johnnagore Bapt CNI Church (John the Baptist) and Old Cemetery, Serampore (Bengal Presidency).

These photographs were taken by members and friends of FIBIS who went on a Family History Tour of East India in 2015. Our thanks to Brenda Boggild and Greta Lawrence who took the photographs and have permitted FIBIS to share them.

Inscription  William Ward one of the Serampore missionaries born at Derby October 20 1769. Arrived at Serampore October 13 1799 where he assisted in the formation of the missionary establishment and laboured with ardent zeal in promoting translations of the sacred scriptures and preaching the gospel to the heathen having impaired his consititution he returned to his native land in Dec 88 and was absent nearly three years during which period he travelled through Great Britain, Holland and the United States of America to encourage missionary zeal and rais funds for Serampore college. He returned to India in 1821 and after labouring with his usual energy for 17 months he was removed to his heavenly rest March 7 1823 aged 53 years 4 months and 15 days
