Service  Lieutenant Buist served with the Sylhet Light Infantry Battalion, in pursuit of the 34th Mutineers, '57-58. Commanded a Detachment at the action at Binna Caudy (in the Cachar District, 12th January'58). Medal. Mentioned in the Despatch of Captain H. B. Stevens, Commanding the Regiment, and was sent with a Detachment to reinforce the station, was attacked by the mutineers and rebel Munnipoorees, which the Detachment repulsed and drove before them. Mentioned by the Officiating Superintendent of Cachar in a Despatch to the Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal, 13th January '58. Received the thanks of Government, 26th January '58. Commanded a Detachment of the Sylhet Light Infantry Battalion employed in the Jynteah Hills, in suppressing the Cossiah insurrection. Skirmishes with the rebels on the 26th and 28th March '60, and capture of the stockaded village of Moong-Gougie. Services brought to the notice of the Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal by Captain Rowlatt, 14th May '60. Received the commendation of the Right Hon'ble Sir Charles Wood, in a Despatch to His Excellency the Governor-General of India, 16th February '61.
