Service  Major Matheson served with the 11th Irregular Cavalry in the Punjab Campaign: present at the 1st and 2nd siege operations and surrender of Mooltan, including the action of Sooroojkhoond, 7th November 48; battle of Goojerat and subsequent pursuit of Sikhs and Affghans. Medal and Clasps. Commanded the 11th Irregular Cavalry in the expedition against the Sonthals, 55, 56. Served throughout the Indian Mutiny in Command of the Benares Horse. Present at the action of Munseytah under Brigadier W. Campbell, Commanding at Allahabad; favorably mentionedin Despatches. Present at the action of Nusrutpore under Brigadier-General Franks, 23rd January 58; mentioned in Despatch. Present at the battle of Sultanpore, commanded the whole of the Cavalry; favorably mentioned in Despatches. Served at the siege and capture of Lucknow. Medal and Clasps, and Brevet-Majority. Served in the Shahabad District under Brigadier Douglas, in 58, 59 ; and subsequently with the Trans-Gogra Brigade under Brigadier Holdich, in the Nepal Frontier,in 59, 60.
