Ensign 1795, 36th Foot, age 16, and joined in India. In 1796 he purchased a Cornetcy in the 19th Light Dragoons. In campaigns to capture Seringapatam and under Wellesley. Wounded at battle of Assaye. Heroic scaling of walls of Vellore in mutiny there. In 1815 ill health compelled him to return to Europe. Died by being knocked down by the shaft of a cabriolet as he left the Senior United Service Club. He was taken to the house of a relative, Mr Semple, jr., surgeon at Islington, where he died.
